Disclosure: We make Todovo. We've done our best to be honest about where it wins and where it doesn't. If you think we've got something wrong, email us at feedback@todovo.ai.
If you've been thinking about a better way to capture voice tasks, you've probably landed on one of three options:
- PLAUD Note ($169) — the dedicated AI recording device that became a hit among knowledge workers
- Apple Watch ($249 and up) — the do-everything wearable that already lives on your wrist
- Todovo (Super Early Bird $49, Kickstarter July 2026) — a single-purpose device built specifically for task capture
We've used all three extensively. Here's an honest comparison.
The Core Question: What Are You Actually Trying to Solve?
Before comparing specs, let's be clear about the use case. Task capture means: you have a thought, action item, or commitment that needs to enter your productivity system — right now, in the moment, before it's lost.
This is different from:
- Meeting transcription (recording long conversations for later review)
- Voice memos (informal audio notes without structure)
- Smart assistant commands ("Set a reminder for 3pm")
All three products do some version of task capture, but they were built for different primary use cases. Understanding that distinction changes how you evaluate them.
PLAUD Note: The Meeting Intelligence Device
Price: $169 one-time + $8–$15/month (AI features)
Weight: 17g
Primary use case: Meeting recording and transcription
PLAUD Note is an elegant, business card-sized device that clips to your phone or sits on a table. You press the button once to start recording, once to stop. It pairs with an app that transcribes the recording and — in more recent versions — extracts action items and summaries using AI.
What PLAUD Note does exceptionally well
Meeting capture is genuine magic. Put it on the table in a 60-minute meeting, let it record, and come back to a clean transcript with action items extracted. For people who attend many meetings, this is a workflow game-changer.
The hardware itself is beautiful. Ultra-thin, durable, excellent build quality. The app has improved significantly in the past year. Audio quality is surprisingly good for such a small device. Background noise handling is adequate for most office environments.
Where PLAUD Note falls short for task capture
It's a recording device, not a task capture device. This is the core distinction.
When you capture a task with PLAUD Note, you start recording, speak your task, stop recording, and then wait for the AI to process the audio — typically a few seconds to a few minutes. The task lands in the PLAUD app, where it needs to be reviewed and migrated into your actual task manager.
This two-step process — capture in PLAUD, then process into your GTD system — creates friction. It's better than nothing. It's not as seamless as direct-to-inbox.
Cost: $169 up front, plus monthly subscription for AI features. If you're primarily interested in task capture and not meeting transcription, you're paying for significant capabilities you won't use.
Apple Watch: The Swiss Army Knife on Your Wrist
Price: Series 10 from $399; older models $249+
Weight: 30–51g (depending on case size)
Primary use case: Everything
Apple Watch is not a task capture device. It's a wrist computer that happens to support task capture as one of hundreds of features.
What Apple Watch does for task capture
With the right setup, Apple Watch can capture tasks reasonably quickly. The two best approaches:
Option A: Siri — Raise to wake → "Hey Siri, remind me to..." → Siri creates a reminder. Fast in ideal conditions. Frustrating when Siri mishears.
Option B: Drafts/OmniFocus/Things app — Tap the app on your wrist → navigate to new capture → dictate → save. More reliable than Siri, but requires more taps.
Our timing results
| Method | Best case | Average | Worst case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siri | 4s | 8s | 20s+ (Siri fail) |
| Drafts app | 5s | 10s | 15s |
Where Apple Watch falls short for task capture
- Wearing it is a prerequisite. If you don't wear it consistently, you have gaps. A dedicated pocket device has no such gaps.
- Wrist-raising is a social signal. In meetings, raising your wrist to speak into your watch signals "I'm doing something else right now."
- Battery anxiety applies. Most Apple Watch users charge nightly, which means the device isn't available before sleep — one of the highest-value capture moments.
- Siri accuracy in technical contexts is a persistent frustration with proper nouns and non-standard vocabulary.
Todovo: The Single-Purpose Capture Device
Price: Super Early Bird $49 / Early Bird $59 / $99 retail
Weight: 12g
Primary use case: Task capture, specifically
Todovo exists because we couldn't find a device that solved the task capture problem specifically, without compromise.
What Todovo does
Press the button. Speak your task. Release. In under 3 seconds, the task appears in your app — already categorized by context, with a suggested priority and project assignment. No screen interaction. No voice assistant invocation. No navigation.
Our timing results
| Scenario | Time to capture |
|---|---|
| Best case (quiet, clear speech) | 2.2s |
| Average case | 2.8s |
| Noisy environment | 3.5s |
| Failure rate | <2% |
Where Todovo wins
- Speed. 2–3x faster than Apple Watch and 4–5x faster than phone-based capture in real-world conditions.
- Social invisibility. A discreet button-press is invisible in meetings and public contexts. No screen. No raised wrist. No spoken command.
- Dedicated purpose. A device that does only one thing can be optimized completely for that thing: smaller, lighter, longer battery, faster interaction.
- Battery life: 3 months on a charge. Compare to Apple Watch (daily) and PLAUD Note (10+ hours active recording).
Where Todovo falls short
- It only does one thing. No meeting transcription, health monitoring, or apps.
- iOS-only at launch. Android support is coming (via Kickstarter Stretch Goal at $45K), but launch requires iOS 16+.
- It doesn't exist yet. As of writing, Todovo launches July 1, 2026 on Kickstarter. PLAUD Note and Apple Watch are available now.

Head-to-Head: Which Use Case Wins?
"I attend 3+ meetings per day and want transcription."
PLAUD Note wins. This is what it was designed for. Todovo doesn't do this.
"I already wear an Apple Watch and want a free upgrade."
Apple Watch is already there. Set up Drafts or OmniFocus for Watch, practice the habit. You don't need another device if you're happy with 8–10 second capture.
"I want the fastest possible task capture with minimal social friction."
Todovo wins. This is specifically what it was built for.
"I'm a GTD practitioner who loses tasks in meetings and during physical activity."
Todovo. The pocket-based, screenless approach is specifically designed for contexts where a watch or phone is awkward.
The Honest Assessment
PLAUD Note is a meeting intelligence platform. If transcribing, summarizing, and extracting action items from meetings is your workflow, it's exceptional value.
Apple Watch is a wrist computer. If you already wear it and want to improve your capture workflow, you're mostly configuring software, not buying new hardware.
Todovo is a dedicated task capture device. If the bottleneck in your productivity system is the moment between "thought occurs" and "thought is in your system," it's the most direct solution at the lowest price.
The question isn't which product is best. It's which problem you're actually trying to solve.
We're launching on Kickstarter July 1, 2026. Super Early Bird pricing ($49) is available to waitlist subscribers before general public access.
